The Jordanian National Commission for Women, in cooperation with the Princess Basma Center for Jordanian Women’s Studies at Yarmouk University, and with the support of UN Women, launched a study titled: “Female Students’ Participation in Student Union Cou

In her remarks, H.E. the Secretary-General of the Commission, Eng. Maha Ali, emphasized the importance of the study in identifying the reality of female students’ participation in student unions at Jordanian universities and the challenges they face, as well as in providing recommendations that would enhance their participation. She noted that the study results showed a noticeable increase in the percentage of female candidates; however, this was not reflected in winning rates. She added that participation in student unions contributes to developing students’ skills and capacities in public engagement, candidacy, elections, and decision-making, and serves as an important gateway to encouraging women’s involvement in public life.

For his part, the President of Yarmouk University, Dr. Malek Al-Sha’ari, stressed that true development can only be achieved through an integrated partnership between men and women—one based on equal opportunities, complementary roles, and recognition of competence and capability—pointing out that this vision aligns with the national vision and the Hashemite leadership.

The event also featured a panel discussion attended by the Vice President for Scientific Research, International Accreditations, and Rankings, Professor Dr. Ruba Al-Batayneh, on the importance of university female students’ participation in political life. The panel included H.E. Senator Khawla Al-Armouti, Chair of the Women’s Committee in the Senate; H.E. MP Hala Al-Jarrah, First Assistant to the Speaker of the House of Representatives; Dr. Ali Al-Khawaldeh, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs; and Dr. Abeer Al-Dababneh, Member of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission.

The event also hosted male and female students from the universities included in the study, who shared their experiences in running for student union elections.
